The Quarantine Concerts

As part of the Quarantine Concerts, an inspired live-stream series hosted by Chicago’s Experimental Sound Studio, Ars Nova Workshop is pleased to present an evening of creative music, all by artists from Philadelphia (though you may not have known it!).

The Ars Nova Workshop-organized Quarantine Concerts features an all-star lineup that speaks to Philadelphia’s vibrancy and rich legacy as a “jazz town.” We’ll feature six sets, each one half-hour long, viewable on the Ars Nova Workshop website, and via the Experimental Sound Studio Twitch account or website.

SUNDAY, APRIL 26, 2020

with performances beginning at 6:00PM

  • Monnette Sudler
    6:00PM (EST)

Last year, Ars Nova presented the return of the Sounds of Liberation, which she led. From her work with Grover Washington to her releases on the prestigious Steeple Chase Records, Monnette is one of Philadelphia’s most valuable players.
  • Joshua Abrams
    6:30PM (EST)

Abrams was once seen busking on the streets of Philadelphia as an original member of The Roots. Since the mid-1990s, he’s been a key figure in Chicago’s creative music scene, and his Natural Information Society has captivated audiences for a decade with psychedelic, hypnotic environments.
  • Jupiter Blue
    7:00PM (EST)

From the Sun Ra Arkestra’s engine room, Jupiter Blue’s tone scientists DM Hotep and Jupiter Girl (Tara Middleton) emerge to reveal elements and precepts of another kind of language, another tomorrow.
  • Brian Marsella
    7:30PM (EST)

Philadelphia’s Brian Marsella is finally being recognized as one of the most talented and imaginative pianists of his generation. A veteran of countless bands, including Banquet of the Spirits and many projects with John Zorn, his recent recordings have been some of the most exciting music coming out of the NYC jazz scene.
  • Matt Hollenberg
    8:00PM (EST)

The burning guitarist of Cleric and John Zorn’s Simulacrum, Matt’s sonic world traverses avant-garde classical, free jazz, dissonant math metal, ambient, and world music.
  • Uri Caine
    8:30PM (EST)

A musician of astonishing virtuosity and versatility, Uri’s playing is an encyclopedia of styles from Tatum to Evans and beyond.

SUPPORT MUSICIANS

Donations are requested on a sliding scale – as much as you can afford, as little as you are able – and all proceeds go 100% to the musicians or to their designated fund.

There’s been heightened recognition recently of the perils of the gig economy and the challenges facing those whose income is dependent on it. Musicians invented the gig economy. They play gigs. We took the word from them. And live music is not only their livelihood, it’s their whole lives.

Ars Nova Workshop has been deeply inspired by the optimism represented by The Quarantine Concerts, and we are honored to be associated with the Experimental Sound Studio team in this joint endeavor.
